If you're keen to see what a real jungle looks, sounds and feels like, you'll have a blast in Anambas. In fact, the majority of the Anambas islands are pretty much completely covered by dense tropical rain forest, the vast majority of which are pristine and untouched by man. This makes Anambas a veritable jungle-trekking paradise. And since many of the Anambas islands consist of hills, some steep, some sloping more gradually, the region offers a wide variety of challenges, both for trekking newbies and more experienced trekkies too.

Now, if you're worried about your fitness level, just let your guide know beforehand. He'll slow the pace to suit you, no worries. After all, the objective is not to get from A to B in as short a time as possible, but to make sure that everyone can enjoy the raw beauty that the environment in Anambas Archipelago has to offer.

Incidentally, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for the elusive mouse deer that make their home in these jungles. They look just like a normal deer, except they're more like a miniature version. Usually quite well-camouflaged, they can be spotted during the day if your trekking party isn't too noisy.

Other interesting sights you may well come across are wild bamboo poles that seem to be reaching for the clouds, Jack and the Beanstalk-style, several species of monkeys, as well as untold kinds of insects and arachnids.

As it has recently been discovered in Anambas, you may also come face to flower with Rafflesia, Indonesia's "bunga nasional", or national flower. At over one meter in diameter and more than 10 kg in weight, the species found in Anambas, Rafflesia arnoldii, happens to be the largest Rafflesia species of all and the largest flower in the world.

And then there's the "hidden waterfall", so called on account of its inaccessibility and palpable sense of mystique. Hard to reach but a sight to behold when it finally reveals itself.

So there you have it, never a dull moment in the jungles of Anambas.

But don't forget to don sturdy footwear, such as mountain boots or good quality sneakers, because you will definitely be navigating your fair share of dropped tree trunks, thorny branches, mossy boulders, as well as slippery slopes and other natural obstacles. Let's face it, a jungle trek wouldn't be fun without some serious challenges to face.

So come and take the road less travelled; explore the breathtaking beauty of Anambas Archipelago's remote mountain rainforest.
