Pulau Genting

Pulau Genting may not be the nearest of the countless sun-kissed Anambas islands to reach from Tarempa, given that it's about an hour's speedboat ride from the top of Siantan. But once Genting looms ahead, it becomes instantly obvious that this little gem is worth the journey, and then some.

The comma-shaped island comprises two distinct sections. The main body of the island faces to the south and consists of two hills that are mostly covered by lush vegetation, a sparser patch here and there. This part of the island also boasts a body of water that may be brackish.

Adjacent to this main island body is Genting's semi-circular coral-filled lagoon, formed by a long ribbon of sandy beach that, in turn, is peppered with shrubbery and a wee mangrove plot.

Genting is especially suitable for a couple of days of recreation during the SW season due to its fortuitous orientation; the closed off part of the lagoon ensures the southeasterlies and southwesterlies have no bearing on the water in the lagoon, since the wind-driven swell and breakers are held at bay by the elevated line of sand that outlines the lagoon boundary.

This renders Genting's lagoon absolutely perfect not just for water fun like snorkeling, but also for an overnight stay on the vessel. Provided, that is, the tide is suitable and the vessel in question has a modest draft, since the lagoon can be rather shallow here and there.

Watermen and waterwomen into windsurfing, kiting/foiling and stand up paddling will undoubtedly have a lot of fun here during the SW months, inside Genting if calmer conditions are preferred, or outside for those in need of more rugged conditions.

Lastly, whilst not tested extensively, the scubadiving here may well be great, given the deeper water surrounding Genting.

Note: Please anchor your vessel to the beach as opposed to the lagoon bottom so as to ensure the coral reef stays undamaged. Thank you.
