Off the Beaten Track
Spin the globe and go. If this is your travel slogan, and you have an inclination for remote, off-the-beaten-track territories that have yet to be discovered by tourism, then Anambas should be your next destination. If even Google's holiday anambas results are sparse, which - let's face it - they are, then Anambas must truly still be under the world's radar.
In fact, it's safe to say that Anambas is an escape that will satisfy most curious travelers' wanderlust and desire to see the world in its original form. There's no KFC in Anambas, no McDonald's, no fast-food at all. There isn't a bus service on Anambas either; the only way to get around is by water taxi, or by moped when you're on any of the inhabited islands. Water taxis and mopeds are available for rent.
If your eye has fallen on this remote little edge-of-the-world corner, pretty much right smack in the middle of nowhere, and you've decided to discover what's really there, then you can bet a fistful of your Indonesian Rupiahs that you won't encounter packed tour buses, corny eateries with template dishes watered down for the traveling masses, or tourist traps awaiting their next victim.
What you will find in Anambas, apart from the kind-hearted, ever-generous local population, exciting history, rich culture and delicious cuisine, is a gin-clear azure-coloured sea, dotted with dozens of breathtaking uninhabited paradise islands. Selfie anyone?
Whichever way you choose to get to Anambas – in spite of the occasional transport inefficiencies, communication barrier and other challenges you might encounter – it's very likely that you'll come away richer when, rather than follow the tracks of others, you create your own.
Anambas isn't in the tourist magazines. Yet. But suffice to say that if you long to see, feel, experience Anambas in all its innocence and natural beauty, now is the time to go. You won't only get way more bang for your buck, you'll also be able to really immerse yourself in the local culture. Best of all, you'll be able to totally unplug from the world and the relentless rat-race. How blissful would that be?
So spin the globe and start with A. The A for Amazing Anambas.
